Most document AI platforms help reviewers read faster. Very few help them rate better.

That gap matters in impairment work. The difficult part is not finding a cervical MRI reference or locating a prior operative note. It is connecting diagnosis, treatment history, functional loss, and chapter logic into a defensible Whole Person Impairment conclusion. Manual review slows that process. Generic OCR does not solve it. And most claims tools stop before the rating workflow even begins.

The market digitized records, not impairment logic

Across insurance and medico-legal review, vendors have made real progress on ingestion, chronology generation, and medical summarization. Those positions reflect where the category has moved: document review is no longer only about searchable scans.

But there is still a major workflow gap. Impairment rating is not the same as record summarization.

A reviewer applying the AMA Guides has to do more than extract facts. The task is interpretive and sequential. Which diagnosis is ratable. Which chapter applies. Whether the record supports a default class or a modifier adjustment. Whether the cited evidence is complete enough to withstand QA, rebuttal, or litigation scrutiny.

That is why impairment work still creates so much manual drag. The records may already be digitized, but the reasoning path remains fragmented.

Search helps find text. It does not build a rating path.

A keyword search for "radiculopathy" or "range of motion" is useful. It is not enough.

The reviewer still has to decide whether the mention is clinically relevant, whether it predates the incident, whether another evaluator contradicted it, and whether the finding actually supports the chapter being considered. In a complex file, those judgments depend on chronology and context, not isolated words.

This is the same structural problem seen in broader claims review. A readable file is not automatically a workable file. For impairment analysis, that distinction becomes more acute because the downstream output must be both medically grounded and procedurally defensible.

The opportunity for AI is not to replace clinical judgment. It is to reduce the reconstruction work that happens before judgment can even begin.

What automation should actually cover

Useful AMA Guides automation should sit later in the workflow than most document tools do.

At a minimum, that means:

- grouping related pages into coherent medical sections rather than raw page lists - extracting the findings that matter to the rating question, not every fact in the file - preserving chronology so causation and progression remain visible - surfacing chapter-relevant evidence with citations back to source pages - helping reviewers compare competing findings before they settle on a rating path

This is where the category is still thin. Competitors publish heavily on summaries, records retrieval, and medical insights. That work is relevant. But there is almost no public positioning around automated WPI support itself. In practice, the reviewer is still expected to bridge the final distance manually.

Why this matters operationally

Impairment work is expensive because senior expertise gets consumed by clerical assembly.

A physician or reviewer should be spending time on interpretation, consistency, and defensibility. Instead, many still spend hours reconstructing the file, locating chapter-relevant evidence, and checking whether a cited conclusion really matches the record. That creates avoidable latency and inconsistent output between reviewers.

For impairment workflows, that means moving from "show me the file" to "show me the support for this rating path." It means AI that can narrow the search space, organize the evidence, and make chapter-level review faster without obscuring the source material.

Teams evaluating AMA Guides AI software should ask a narrower question than vendors usually answer: once the records are digitized and summarized, how much rating work is still left for the human to assemble manually?

That is where the real product difference begins.
